Crisis Residence is for both children and adults who reside in Suffolk County, New York. The purpose of Crisis Residence is for individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis and/or are experiencing challenges in daily life that create risk for themselves or others that cannot be managed in the individual’s home and community environment without on-site supports.
Residential Crisis Support (RCS)
Residential Crisis Support (RCS) is a voluntary, short-term residential service for individuals who are at least 18 years old experiencing a mental health crisis and/or are experiencing challenges in daily life that create risk for an escalation of symptoms that cannot be managed in the individual’s home and community environment without on-site supports. A mental health diagnosis is not necessary to be eligible for this service. The expected length of stay is less than 28 days.
Services that offered on site are as follows:
- Assistance in personal care and activities of daily living
- Peer support
- Engagement with identified supports
- Safety planning
- Integration of direct care and support services
- Case management activities that emphasize discharge planning
- Collaboration and linkages with service options in the community which provide continuation of ongoing treatment and rehabilitation
- Medication management and training
- Medication monitoring
- Provides access to 3 meals per day
Intensive Crisis Residence Service (ICR)
Intensive Crisis Residence (ICR) is a voluntary short-term, residential treatment service for individuals who are at least 18 years old who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis, which includes acute escalation of mental health symptoms. A mental health diagnosis is necessary for eligibility for this service. The immediate goal of ICR is to provide treatment and supports to help the individual manage symptoms and return to their home without onsite supports. The expected length of stay is less than 28 days. Individuals receiving services at the Intensive Crisis Residence may also participate in treatment programs in the community that are not duplicative of services being provided to the individual within the ICR.
Services that offered on site, include all of the services provided at the Residence Crisis Support program, as well as:
- Comprehensive Assessment
- Medication Therapy
- Individual and group counseling
- Engagement and support to address co-occurring disorders
Children’s Crisis Residence
Children’s Crisis Residence provides a level of short-term support with the goal of having the child return to their home and to prevent the need for a more intensive level of care. These services are one component of a comprehensive continuum of crisis services intended to help avert extended emergency room visits and inpatient hospitalizations. The purpose of a crisis residence program is to stabilize a child’s psychiatric crisis symptoms and transition the child to community-based services. The expected length of stay is less than 21 days.
A Children’s Crisis Residence Program provides the following required components by qualified staff in accordance with their scope of practice:
- Mental Health Assessment
- Service Planning
- Family Support
- Individual and Family Counseling
- Care Coordination
Criteria for Admission:
- Child is under the age of 21; AND
- The child/youth is experiencing acute psychological/emotional change which results in a marked increase in personal distress and which exceed the abilities and resources of those involved to effectively resolve it; AND

The child/youth demonstrated at least one of the following:
- Impairment in mood/thought/behavior that is disruptive to home, school, or the community, OR
- Behavior escalating to the extent that higher intensity services will likely be required; AND
- The intervention is necessary to further evaluate, resolve, and/or stabilize the child/youth, AND
- The child/youth is not at imminent risk of harm to self or others
Respite
Respite is for individuals who reside in Suffolk County and are at least 18 years old with a primary diagnosis of a Serious Mental Illness (SMI) The purpose of Respite is to provide a safe, supportive and short-term comfortable environment for individuals experiencing a crisis who are in need of support. These services are to be utilized by individuals who are at risk for psychiatric hospitalization or experiencing stressors in their home.
Respite referrals are processed Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm.
Federation Of Organizations Respite Program
Federation of Organizations’ Respite Program is for individuals who reside in Suffolk County and are at least 18 years old with a primary diagnosis of a Serious Mental Illness (SMI). Respite may be utilized for reasons including having a conflict with a housemate, major maintenance matters such as needing a repair in their current apartment or needing a short-term stay while awaiting another housing placement. Individuals need to be able to manage their medications independently, be independent with all daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, bathing, toileting, and cannot be homeless. Individuals must have a confirmed address to return home to. Each Respite has a Peer Worker living on-site and a Federation employee contacting the individual during their stay if needed. The expected length of stay is less than 14 days.
FREE Hospital Diversion
Family Residences & Essential Enterprises Inc (FREE) provides Crisis Respite Services/Hospital Diversion in Suffolk County for individuals who are at least 18 years old with a primary diagnosis of a Serious Mental Illness (SMI). The targeted population is men and women who are at high risk for psychiatric hospitalization, and have a history of psychiatric hospitalizations and readmissions. Individuals do not have to have an address to return home to in order to qualify for this service. Hospital Diversion is a Community Residence setting that provides 24/7 onsite staff and supervision of medications. The expected length of stay is less than 14 days.
Concern for Independent Living
Concern for Independent Living provides Crisis Respite for individuals in Suffolk County who are at least 18 years old with a primary diagnosis of a Serious Mental Illness (SMI). Crisis Respite is a service to support men and women who are at high risk for psychiatric hospitalization, and have a history of psychiatric hospitalizations and readmissions and are not ready to return to their residential placement. Crisis Respite is a 24/7 Supervised setting single room occupancy for Individuals who are medically stable, must not demonstrate signs of active substance use or withdrawal symptoms as determined by a physician, nurse practitioner or psychiatrist. Individuals must have a confirmed address to return home to. The expected length of stay is less than 14 days.
