Book
9. Salt Marshes and Mosquito Control
Open Marsh Water Management (OMWM) is based on the premise
that ditching has resulted in the loss of marsh-surface habitat
for mosquito-larvae predators and that restoration of marshes
to a pre-ditch state could provide “natural” mosquito
control. OMWM mosquito-control attempts to create habitat
for fish that prey on mosquitoes. To assess the effectiveness
of regional OMWM projects the Team, in conjunction with Dr.
Goodbred of the Marine Sciences Research Center (SUNY at Stony
Brook), characterized marshes at those sites and identified
the goals, techniques, and outcomes of the projects. This
review includes an assessment of how marshes respond to OMWM
and what constitutes “marsh health.” Regional
efforts are investigated for their potential in Suffolk County.
The result of this review will include a revised OMWM manual
in Task 10 and an alternative mosquito management method.
